Eden at Drawing Rooms II, Hamburger Kunsthalle

My short animation Eden was part of Drawing Rooms II, from 26 November 2016 until 21 May 2017. "The medium of drawing is more relevant today than ever: For young artists drawing has once more become a central practice, more important than it has been for a long time. While the first part of the exhibitioon presents developments from the 1950s all the way to current approaches, the second part is now dedicated to wall drawings, room installations and virtual animations." Curator: Dr. Petra Roettig.

Michelangelo Antonioni in Eye

EYE presents a major exhibition devoted to Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni. With his famous trilogy The Adventure, The Night and Eclipse, Antonioni became one of the most innovative directors of the 20th century.

As part of the opening program, my film Julia/Guiliana will be screened and I will be interviewed about my work and my fascination for the way Antonioni used architectural space in his films.

Info on the exhibition and retrospective is here.

Old Ponies: New Tricks

Lines Fiction is a blog curated by Bettina Munk, dedicated to draughtsmen and women who see their drawings as coequal to their animations. Old Ponies: New Tricks is an online summer exhibition that shows how both media inspire and complement each other.

The exhibition stays online in the archive: Old Ponies: New Tricks

Anonyme Zeichner

How does one’s own assessment change if there is no information at all about the artist? How can one develop a personal definition of value if the sales prices are all identical? What is then a good drawing? ANONYMOUS DRAWINGS is conceptual art and exhibition project all in one: Each and every anonymous artist becomes part of a collective work of art where hierarchies do not exist.

I am very pleased that one of my drawings is selected for the upcoming edition of Anonyme Zeichner, starting in Berlin. All drawings are for sale for a fixed price of €200, and the name of the artist will only be revealed after the buy. After the exhibition at Kunstverein Tiergarten/Galerie Nord, Anonyme Zeichner will go to artQ13 in Rome, Galerie Geyso in Braunschweig and Stadt- und Industrie Museum Rüsselsheim.

More info? see Anonyme Zeichner

For the pilot project Buitenbeeld, initiated by Projectbureau Zuidas in collaboration with Ngage Media, I re-edited three of my animations into 26-second versions. Polka (2004), Eden (2011) and A50 (2013) now have ultrshort versions without sound. The animations will be screened daily on the LCD screen at Zuiplein near Station Zuid/WTC,  and on screens at City Theatre at Leidseplein and Bijlmer Arena (all in Amsterdam), on a screen in Hoog Catharijne (Utrecht) and on the Haagse Toren (Den Haag).

New animation: Ekkersrijt (A50)

This animation was commissioned by BKKC (Brabants Kenniscentrum Kunst en Cultuur) for the project brabant vertelt. With the use of an app, you can walk around the slightly downtrodden commercial area Ekkersrijt, located north of Eindhoven. You are guided by an audio tour made by writer Rob van Kranenburg and artist Bas van den Hurk, starting at the Ikea, following the 'meubelboulevard' (furniture mall), and circling office buildings and the freeway. Their cultural criticism is prompted by the dynamics of consumption and working environments that reflect the Zeitgeist. The artworks in public space along the way are reminders of believes and aspirations that are now outdated. I made an animation that plays on your smartphone at the end of the route, based on the questions that are posed in the conversation between van Kranenburg and van der Hurk.
